Financial support

As a student you could be entitled to access financial support to assist you, while you are studying to help with the cost of equipment and books for your course.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)

If you are 19 or over and are starting your first Level 2 or Level 3 course, you may be entitled to an Adult Learning Grant.

ALG is there to give you a helping hand towards travel, study materials or other costs you might incur while you’re studying. If you’re an adult taking a full-time course, you could get up to £30 per week during term time - that’s around £1,000 a year.

Learner Support Fund

The Learner Support Fund is money that can be given (subject to availability) to help students towards the costs incurred as a result of studying.

To apply for the Learner Support Fund, you must be:

-          Aged 16 or over

-          Studying a Further Education programme

-          Resident in the UK for at least three years

-          In receipt of, or dependent upon, an incomed assessed benefit, such as Income Support, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit.

Care to Learn

Care to Learn is a scheme that helps young parents who wish to remain in learning, by assisting them with the cost of childcare (up to £155 per week).

You can get Care to Learn if:

-          You are under 20 when you start learning

-          You are on a full or part-time course or training programme

-          You are caring for your own child(ren)

-          You are living in England

-          You use a registered childcare provider

You can also get Care to Learn if you are a father and have caring responsibilities for your child.

Care to Learn will not affect your own or your family’s benefits or allowances. You do not have to be on benefits to receive Care to Learn.
