Harborough MP shares career insights with college students

Monday 5th November 2018

Students at the South Leicestershire campus of North Warwickshire & South Leicestershire College were inspired to think about their future careers following a visit from Neil O’Brien MP in which he outlined his experience of working with the Prime Minister.

Mr O’Brien, who is Member of Parliament for Harborough, Oadby and Wigston, told students about his time as an adviser to Number 10, working on the ‘Midlands Engine’ strategy, designed to boost jobs and grow the economy.

Principal and Chief Executive Marion Plant, OBE, welcomed Neil, and invited him to see how the College was playing its part in delivering the strategy.

As part of his visit, Neil was treated to a professional drill display by Public Services students. He also took part in a question and answer session with the students.

Neil said, “It was great to visit South Leicestershire College and hear from the public service students. The students and their drill were both incredibly impressive, which is testament to the high standard of teaching at the College. It was interesting to hear about their different career options and I look forward to visiting again to catch up with them in the future.”

Marion Plant said, “We’re delighted that Neil has chosen to visit our college to find out more from our students about the issues facing them as they work towards successfully completing their study programmes and start to make decisions about their next steps and future careers.

“We hope that Neil has been able to gain an insight into how our ambitions as a college complement the work he has done on the Midlands Engine strategy, and we are delighted to have an opportunity to showcase the part we play in its success.”

“Since South Leicestershire College merged with North Warwickshire and Hinckley College last year, our geographical reach now spans the East and West Midlands from Coventry to Leicester and across Leicestershire and North Warwickshire.

Along with our commercial partners and the businesses we support, the College continues to consolidate its strengths so that it can make an even more significant contribution to economic growth.

“In 2016/17 we were rated top in both Leicester and Leicestershire, and in Coventry and Warwickshire for employer satisfaction with a rating of 89%, having moved up the rankings by 100 places.  We are also proud to have the highest number of students in our sub-regions who move into positive destinations - work or further study.”
