Apprenticeship offer “more secure job prospects”

Wednesday 24th January 2018

Recent research by IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers) has revealed that 58% of people ‘believe skilled apprenticeships offer more secure job prospects than a university education’.

Paul Dancer, Strategic Lead for Technical Apprenticeships, from North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College discusses:

“This is a positive indicator that Apprenticeships are beginning to be seen as an equivalent to university education rather than the second-best option.

“Apprentices begin their career in the work place, gaining solid work experience alongside their qualification. Not only does this serve as an advantage in terms of career prospects, learners also avoid the high debts associated with university education.

“There is, however some way to go in terms of the level of careers information available to school leavers. Engineering, for example is a huge focus, both locally and nationally. It is important that young people are aware of the breadth of career options available – to remove the stereotypes and to emphasise the creative and innovative aspects of this ever evolving industry.

“Here at the College, Engineering is a huge priority sector, with our current work developing the MIRA Technology Institute, we hope to introduce more young people into the sector via the Apprenticeship route.”
