The UK Logistics sector is thriving and will need an extra 1.2million new recruits by 2022.
So how can the industry keep up with this demand?
John Marvin, Learning and Skills Manager for Fork-lift Trucks at North Warwickshire & Hinckley College discusses how Apprenticeships are the key to this growth.
“We work with a number of small, medium and large employers across the UK to provide Fork-lift Truck training. The reason Apprenticeships prove to be so popular is because they are effectively a way for businesses to ‘grow their own.’ They can be designed to address specific skills gaps and develop staff members who have in-depth knowledge of their job role and the organisation.
“On top of this there is no upper age limit and they are available to current staff members and new recruits.”
“Here at the College we are training 106 fork-lift truck Apprentices this year alone. As part of their programme, Apprentices gain experience of working on a variety of different trucks, examples include gas, diesel and electric counterbalance trucks, electric reach trucks, electric powered pallet trucks, electric order pickers and hand pallet trucks.”
“We have a dedicated Training Centre located in Harrowbrook Industrial Estate, which houses a fork-lift truck training and maintenance area, live warehouse and lift truck driver training facilities.
“As part of our ongoing work to train the next generation of lift-truck employees, we are also involved in the trailblazer to develop the Lift Truck Technician standard.”
