IntroductionIf your ambition is to work in the ever expanding media industry then this is the course for you. The emphasis of this course is on moving image and radio production. You will gain invaluable practical skills in a variety of disciplines from TV Production and fiction to documentary and radio. Learn lighting, camera work, editing as well as gaining industry knowledge to succeed in this competitive industry. You will encounter academic and practical challenges with the opportunity to work with real clients and create portfolio. During the course you will work with a range of cutting-edge equipment, and have access to workshops, on-line digital editing suites, digital SLR cameras and a fully equipped television studio as well as a 24/7 radio broadcasting studio. This one-year course has a vocational emphasis and enables you to develop your video and radio production skills, editing, sound recording, lens based and digital media. Study OutlineThe HNC will be broken down into eight units. All units will require a significant amount of private study designed to develop both your technical and communication skills. Each unit will require the submission of an assignment based on the unit content. Your assignment will be graded with a pass, merit or distinction with all units counting towards your final HNC. Entry RequirementsIdeally you should have studied Media, Computing or IT at Level 3, but candidates with suitable experience or a strong desire to learn more about this industry will be considered. You will require: • GCSE English and GCSE Maths at Grade C or above And either • 1 GCE A Levels (A* – C grades) • Relevant BTEC Level 3 qualification in Media or IT at Merit • Access to Higher Education Certificate • Or equivalent Media Experience All applicants will require an initial assessment and interview by a member of the lecturing team. EquipmentPlease note that some courses at SLC require additional expenditure by students, for instance to buy materials, print documents and travel to work placements. While SLC offers a wide range of bursaries and excellent library resources to support learning activities, some additional cost is possible.
AttendanceYou will be expected to attend college for 12 hours per week and additional study outside of lesson times will be necessary.
AssessmentYou will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through coursework (presentations, essays and reports) and usually an exam or test. You will normally attend around 12 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week, and we expect you to undertake at least 15 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research. ProgressionAfter successfully completing the one year programme you will be able to progress onto the HND Year 2 at the college or move onto the 2nd year of a degree or gain employment in any of the following industry fields: • TV or Film Production • Video Editing • Camera Engineer • Radio Broadcaster • Lighting or Sound Technician
