IntroductionThis new standard is for employees with a job role relating to a Mechanical Technician, who works with various types of plant and equipment commonly found throughout the Engineering Industry sectors. Dependent upon the sector that they are employed in there may be subtle differences in terms of the composition and application of the plant and equipment. However, the fundamental principles of operation will be the same regardless of the engineering sector.
Study OutlineThe Mechanically bias study programme is designed to enable the Technician to apply their knowledge of plant and systems to safely perform maintenance and operational activities with minimum supervision. Core skills supported and developed include complying with industry health, safety and environmental working practices and regulations, fault location, remove, replace and repair faulty components, effective communication with business stakeholders, read, understand and interpret information and work in compliance with technical specifications and supporting documentation, prepare work areas to undertake work related activities and reinstate those areas after the completion of the work related activities, inspect and maintain appropriate plant and equipment to meet operational requirements, assess and test the performance and condition of plant and equipment and effectively communicate, handover and confirm that the appropriate engineering process has been completed to specification.
Entry RequirementsYou will need at least three GCSEs grade A-C including English, maths and science or you may have achieved level 2 engineering qualification. EquipmentOveralls, safety boots, pen, calculator and memory stick (USB). For safety reasons, if you require access to the workshops you will need to wear the required PPE items to operate safely. Failure to bring in equipment may result in you being sent back to your employer
AttendanceGenerally over a 3 year period 1 day release at college. This will be discussed and agreed with your employer. Length of time on this programme could be altered depending on the prior attainment of the candidate. Functional skills may also be factored in on a day release basis if required, on occasions this may have to be delivered on a different day of the week, this will be discussed and agreed with the employer with maximum notice given.
AssessmentAssessments of this standard will be via assignments for the technical certificate, workplace observations, building a portfolio of work related evidence and online tests. There is also an externally assessed test to be achieved, this is the end point assessment.
ProgressionStandards are under development all the time, progression will be to a high level engineering or management standard relating to your (then) current job role, experience and business needs
