IntroductionThe Foundation Diploma is for learners looking to study performing arts as a one-year, full-time course and supports progression onto the extended diploma in the second year of the performing arts programme. This full-time qualification is a highly practical courses designed to develop your technical performance skills in preparation for professional training or work in the performing arts industry. Students will work in vocational settings to create performances for a range of audience types.
Study OutlineThis course is a stand-alone course as well as the first year of an Extended Diploma. The first year looks at six units which includes two external exams involving both performance and a written element. The four core units are a mix of acting, dance and musical theatre, with one unit being a theoretical unit. In addition to the four core units are two specialist units. The second year requires seven more units that will further prepare you for auditions to a higher level of training. Delivery takes the form of technique classes, workshops, rehearsals, performances, lectures, discussions and tutorials.
Entry RequirementsYou will need to have four GCSEs at grade C, or a Merit grade profile from the BTEC Level 2, and above and evidence of skills in your specific pathway choice within performing arts. All applicants will be interviewed and take part in a practical audition. The audition process may include a group workshop as well as prepared speeches (Acting) or a prepared solo choreography (Dance). Musical Theatre candidates will be expected to prepare a speech, dance routine and solo song. The solo song could be combined with the dance routine.
EquipmentAll successful applicants will need to purchase Appropriate black clothing for practical sessions, Appropriate footwear e.g. ballet/jazz shoes, Pen & Pencil, Notepad and a Ring binder.
AttendanceFoundation Diploma - 1 year full-time Students will be expected to attend external performances which may be in the evenings or at weekends in addition to their daily routine of classes and rehearsals.
AssessmentAssessment is through a process of continuous assessment and covers both written and practical work. All work is modular. You will be asked to maintain records of rehearsals and research logs as well as a video portfolio of practical assessment work. There are two external exams which consist of a performance on a given theme and a theoretical exam.
ProgressionWith the foundation diploma you will be able to progress onto the Extended Diploma which will enable you to progress on to HNC/D or Degree level studies in your chosen pathway. You may also be able to audition for entrance to Drama Schools, Dance Colleges and Stage Schools. A range of training opportunities for other careers in the Arts will also be open to you. You will be guided in your decisions by your tutor.
