|Introduction||This is a CPCAB validated course and can be taken as part of professional counsellor training. You can also take the course to enhance your work skills in any situation where you are dealing with people to develop your own life skills or for your own interest. The approach to learning and helping is based upon a Humanistic approach to counselling - specifically the Person-Centred approach to helping based on the work of Carl Rogers.|
|Study Outline||The focus of the course is on counselling theory, personal awareness and professional practice. Topics covered include: The stages of counselling process including issues such as psychological contact, the working alliance, the concept of the self and the process of change. In addition, the course focuses on agency work in preparation for work placement and professional issues in counselling - such as ethics and confidentiality.|
|Entry Requirements||You need to have successfully completed our Certificate in Counselling Skills (CSKL2) course or an equivalent Counselling skills course. Entry is through an application form, a tutor report and an informal interview.
NB: This course requires a high level of personal responsibility for learning and development. It is recommended that students visit www.cpcab.co.uk to see the criteria requirements at this level.
|Equipment||An audio/visual recording device is essential and access to a computer. Texts and websites will be advised at induction.|
|Attendance||One year, part-time, evenings 6.00 - 9.00pm. The course runs over one academic year and is made up of 30 weekly sessions of 3 hours per week.|
|Assessment||Assessment is ongoing throughout the course by tutors, peers and self. A weekly reflective learning review is completed. In addition assignments on aspects of counselling theory, an audio/visual skills practice recording and evaluation, a case study, and an external assessment are completed. A portfolio of learning tasks and evidence are required.|
|Progression||This can be a stand-alone course or the second part of a four year progression route into professional Counselling subject to entry requirements and interview.|
