IntroductionThis course is for those looking for a successful career in computing. It provides a specialist, work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required by the computing sector. It is ideal for those who prefer to demonstrate their skills through coursework and allows you to broaden your career opportunities by opting not to specialise in one particular area.
Study OutlineThe HND will be broken down into two academic years with 8 units delivered in year 1 and 9 units delivered in year 2. All units will require a significant amount of private study designed to develop both your technical and communication skills. Each unit will require the submission of an assignment based on the semester’s content. Your assignment will be graded with a pass, merit or distinction with all units counting towards your final HND. Year 2 • Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation • Web Applications Development • Programming in Java • Network Security • Network Operating Systems • 3D Modelling and Animation • Digital Image Creation and Development • Internet Server Management • Computer Games Design and Development
Entry RequirementsIdeally you should have studied Information Technology (IT) / Computing at Level 3, but candidates with suitable experience or a strong desire to learn more about this industry will be considered. You will require: • GCSE English and GCSE Maths at Grade C or above And either • 1 GCE A Levels (A* – C grades) • Relevant BTEC Level 3 qualification in IT at Merit • Access to Higher Education Certificate • Or equivalent IT Experience All applicants will require an initial assessment and interview by a member of the lecturing team.

AttendanceYou will normally attend around 12 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week, and we expect you to undertake at least 15 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research.
AssessmentAssessment is through coursework (presentations, essays and reports) and usually an exam.
ProgressionAfter successfully completing the course you will be able to progress on to the final year of a degree, or gain employment in any of the following industry fields: • Computer Networking • Technical Support • Web Development • Software Development You may also use the skills, techniques and knowledge learned as a springboard towards studying towards a vendor specific qualification.
