IntroductionThis is a two year work related qualification which has been designed to provide a number of routes into higher education or employment. It is a nationally recognised OCR qualification and is equivalent to three A-levels. The programme will appeal to students who have a keen interest in IT and in the long term wish to pursue a career in computing and IT. Functional Skills or GCSEs in English and Mathematics will be integrated into the course.
Study OutlineYear 1: Communications and employability skills for IT; Information Systems; Database design; Website production; developing computer games; exploring computer applications (programming) spreadsheet modelling; systems analysis and system design; functional skills; individual and group tutorials. Year 2: Computer Networks, Project Planning with IT, Computer Animation, Impact of the use of IT on business systems, web server scripting plus a range of four other units
Entry RequirementsEntry requirements are a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above or their equivalent.
EquipmentMemory stick, notepad, course e-book (available online from the College Library).
AttendanceTwo years, full-time and based at Nuneaton or Hinckley campus.
AssessmentAll 18 units will be assessed both internally and subject to external moderation. All units are graded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Fail. Each qualification has an overall grade awarded on completion. Learners will need to have successfully complete nine units in year one to progress onto year two.
ProgressionThe next step on completion of the course is progression onto either hihger education or employment/apprenticeship. The College offers learners the opportunity to study part-time for a BTEC HNC in Computing - two evenings per week over two years as an alternative to a full-time university course.
