IntroductionThe subject consists of a mixture of mathematical topics including, Number, Statistics, Algebra and Shape and Space. The course is offered at Foundation level (grades G-C). The Higher level (grades D-A*) is also offered, if there is sufficient demand to support a separate class. Alternatively learners can study additional material in their own time to supplement the Foundation material in order to sit the Higher exams.
Study OutlineTopics studied include Number - Fractions, negative numbers, percentages, properties of numbers, multiples, factors, prime, square, and powers etc. Statistics - Collecting data, charts, graphs, averages and probability Algebra - Factorisation, simplifying expressions, solving linear equations, using conversion graphs Shape and Space - Area and perimeter, volume, angles, scale drawing, Pythagoras' Theorem.
Entry RequirementsMandatory: Initial assessment result of Level 2 And where possible: Evidence of GCSE grade 3 Evidence of Grade D (gained within the last 3 years) Or Evidence of Functional skills Level 2 (gained within the last 3 years)
EquipmentFor this course you will need a scientific calculator, a protractor, a ruler, as well as pens, pencils and notepad. Textbooks containing many exercises for use in class and at home are available for purchase.
AttendanceThere is one class per week of 3 hours. All learners will be expected to complete homework that is set each week – this will typically take between 1 and 2 hours. Thursday: 11.00 to 14.30
AssessmentThroughout the course you will carry out a number of assessments that will then form your homework plans for revising. You will be advised of suitable websites and resources that will help you revise in your own time and prepare you for the final exams. There are 3 morning exams and you are expected to attend all 3.
