BTEC Higher Nationals are designed to provide a specialist vocational programme, linked to professional body requirements and National Occupational Standards where appropriate, with a strong work related emphasis. The qualifications provide a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in their sector and their national recognition by employers allows progression direct into employment.
This exciting and flexible programme aims to provide a broad introduction to Fashion and Textile design and equip students with an extensive range of technical skills within Design, Textiles, Pattern cutting and Manufacture to list a few. The programme includes fashion shows, competitions, visits to exhibitions, fashion trips to London and other major fashion capitals and projects set by industry. |
|Study Outline||The BTEC Higher National Diploma in Fashion & Textiles is a 16 unit qualification of which five are core units. Initially students will spend an interdisciplinary period in two pathways: Fashion Design and Textile Design. Students then elect to specialise in one of these pathways for the second year of the programme. You will be introduced to the techniques of: Fashion Design, Fashion Illustration and Presentation using upto date Software Applications, Fashion Textiles (printed and embroidered), Pattern Cutting, Garment Technology, Garment Construction, Contextual studies, Professional Practice, Photography and Visual Communication. All Fashion students will have access to our specialised equipment and facilities. This includes a new fully equipped machine room with industrial sewing machines and overlockers, print and design studios with industry standard computers and software. The staff delivering this programme have experience in a diverse range of fashion and textile practices. |
|Entry Requirements||Applicants should be at least 18 years of age on entry and should have a comprehensive portfolio of work plus one of the following: 240 UCAS Tariff Points; BTEC National Diploma L3 with MMM as a minimum; Level 3 Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art and Design); An International Baccalaureate with 24 points; An equivalent qualification or experience. Applications are particularly welcome from mature students with relevant work experience.

|Attendance||Attendance for full time is 3 days a week across 2 years - which includes open workshop time.
Part Time available of 2 days a week across 3 years.|
|Assessment||All units will be individually graded as pass, merit or distinction. To achieve a pass grade for the unit learners must meet the assessment criteria set out in the BTEC programme specifications.
Progress is monitored by continuous assessment procedures. Students receive regular feedback at assessment points during the course. Students will be required to complete all units and the points scored for each unit to form the end grade
|Progression||After successful completion of the 2 year course graduates of the HND Design for Fashion or Textiles can apply to do a top up course at level 6 on to a BA(Hons)Degree program in areas such as Fashion Design, Costume, Fashion Marketing and Textiles. Graduates can also progress into employment opportunities in both the fashion and textile industries.|
