What are we doing?

Web- conferencing: a more sustainable approach to communication and learning

web_conferencing_240The College has recently been granted ‘LSIS Cut the Carbon Fund,’ funding for developing a project entitled “Web-conferencing: a more sustainable approach to communication and learning”.

The aim of the project is to offer staff and students the opportunity to attend online meetings and training events, eliminating the need for them to travel between the sites.  This is now possible thanks to Cisco Webex, web-based software that allows remote communication anytime, any place in the world. You just need an internet enabled computer, a webcam and microphone (bookable from the College Libraries).

A web-conferencing practice area has also been arranged within the College Byte Centres for anyone who wants to try the new facility, in a more private environment.

The College will benefit from the project in many diverse ways:

-          Reducing fuel consumption

-          Reduction in mileage/transport expenses claims

-          Reduction of the overall College carbon footprint

-          Saving in staff time

-          More efficient workplace

ESF Award

award_picture_240North Warwickshire & Hinckley College won the ESF sustainable development policy and plan award for the high level of commitment it has shown to promoting sustainable development across the College. The College’s comprehensive policy and plan not only covers key activities such as reducing energy consumption and tackling waste, but also includes objectives for promoting the sustainable development theme directly to students by integrating it into the curriculum and encouraging students to run their own innovative activities such as fashion and design shows using recycled materials.

Carbon Management Plan

carbon_trust_240In May 2011 the College has decided to participate in the Carbon Management Programme launched by the Carbon Trust with the intention to create an action plan to guide the organization toward a long term commitment to carbon reduction.

Since 2004 the Carbon Trust’s Carbon Management programme has been helping public sector bodies and universities to save money, reduce their impact on the environment, and prepare for new and existing climate change legislation. In 2011 The Carbon Trust has enlarged this programme to include the FE sector; North Warwickshire and Hinckley College is among the 46 FE Colleges nationwide that has agreed to participate to the programme.

The Carbon Management Plan sets out our strategy and action plan for reducing carbon emissions from year 2009/10 to 2014/15. It identifies the tangible and intangible benefits of Carbon Management and describes the governance arrangements to keep the programme on track.

In 2009/10 the College emitted 2,908 tonnes of CO2 on energy and water usage, waste disposal and business travel. We believe there is potential for reducing these emissions and this is why in the Carbon Management Plan we have committed to reduce the College overall carbon emissions by 35% by the end of the academic year 2014/15 from the 2009/10 baseline of 2,908 tonnes CO2.
