Budding make-up artists excel in finals of national competitions

North Warwickshire and Hinckley College has won the prestigious Educator’s Award as part of the National Make-Up Awards at the NEC in Birmingham thanks to three of its make-up artistry students.

Adele Cooper, Millie Tilling and Daisy-May Pursey-Agg, all studying Level 3 Make-Up Artistry at the College’s Nuneaton campus, entered for awards at the annual Beauty UK exhibition earlier this month, which welcomes thousands of professionals each year to the largest beauty trade show outside London.

The Educator’s Award is presented to the school or college that is most successful within the overall competition. Points are awarded for the number of students competing and any placings they achieve in the competition categories. It is the second time in three years that the College has scooped the award.

As part of the competition, the students were tasked with creating a simulated injury using make-up suitable for the theme of Dunkirk, followed by a fantasy creation based on the feature film, ‘Avengers:Infinity War’. Their combined scores secured the Educator’s Award for the College.

In addition, Adele Cooper picked up a third-place prize in the TV Simulation category. Adele said: “I improvised a lot on my piece so when my name was called to say that I had won a prize, I was really surprised. The judge told me that she was really impressed.”

Make-up artistry tutor Lucy Johnson said, “I am proud of our students’ achievements, they did really well against a strong field from all over the UK. We always find that they enjoy competitions and it helps to develop their confidence and ability to work under pressure in what is a fast-paced and competitive industry.”

When they have completed their qualifications, all three students have an ambition to work in the make-up industry and want to become full-time make-up artists.

The National Make-Up Awards are supported by the National Association of Screen Make-Up Artists and Hairdressers (NASMAH). The event took place as part of Beauty UK, held at the NEC Birmingham on 20 and 21 May.

As well as competing, the students were able to gain some insights into the latest trends in beauty, nails, tanning, hair and complementary therapies.
