Apprenticeships

With the government pledging to create 3 million Apprenticeships by 2020, Apprenticeships are here to stay, so what are they and how can they help your business to thrive?

What is an Apprenticeship?

  • Apprentices work as a paid employee within an organisation whilst working towards a nationally recognised qualification
  • They work for at least 30 hours a week and training for their qualification will take place either at work or in College, usually for one day per week
  • Apprenticeships take between 1-5 years depending on the level, framework, sector and prior skills
  • Available to current and new employees, they start from GCSE or equivalent up to degree level

As part of their employment, Apprentices must:

  • Work with experienced staff
  • Learn job-specific skills
  • Study for a work-based qualification during their working week, e.g. at College
  • Be paid the national minimum wage for Apprenticeships

Money & Funding

As part of their employment, Apprentices must be paid the national minimum wage for Apprenticeships - £3.40 (October 2016).

Employing an Apprentice

Direct Employment
After taking a recruitment brief, the College will support you to advertise your vacancy on the Apprenticeship website, through Jobcentre Plus, as well as through the College’s official website and social media channels. Once the vacancy has closed, we will support you to shortlist applications against a set criteria and invite successful candidates into College for assessments and informal interviews. We will then support you to organise formal interviews with each candidate. Once you have selected a candidate, we will arrange the Apprenticeship Training and provide you with ongoing support from an assessor who has knowledge of your industry.
