What are we doing?

Reduce, Reuse, Recycling

The College aims to reduce the amount of waste produced and reuse items within the College where possible, by following the three 'R' rule: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Banks of bins for paper & card, mixed recycling and general waste are installed across all College campuses.

NWHC Freecycle

Each year we throw away items that are unwanted but still in good condition. These items are now being collected so they can be redistributed to students and staff around the College who can make use of them. By developing a system of re-use, waste is diverted from landfill and items are sourced in a more cost effective and sustainable way.

Energy & water consumption

Across all our campuses the College uses a significant volume of energy and water for its activities. To reduce the use of natural resources and to improve energy and water conservation, the College aims to invest in energy efficient measures where affordable.

Examples of some of the most successful projects are:

Sustainability online course

We have also developed an in-house interactive web- based learning resource specifically designed to address the needs of training on sustainable development and promote sustainability across a wider audience.

Green Week

Green Week is an annual College initiative that aims to promote sustainable living. A variety of activities, stands, public talks, games and films are offered throughout the week giving everybody the opportunity to learn about sustainability in many different ways.

This is a scheme launched by the government to encourage more commuting by bike which includes a tax break for those wishing to hire a bike from an employer.
