Business owner Carl Fox discusses why Apprenticeships are an important part of his training strategy.
Working with North Warwickshire & Hinckley College, Carl has increased the number of Apprentices he takes on each year, with five Apprentices currently employed across his two hair salons located in Barwell and Hinckley.
“I’m a very firm believer that Apprentices are the life blood of our industry. While the industry continues to evolve, and as trends come and go, we need a new intake of future hairdressers, without that fresh new talent the industry would die out.
“Our future professionals (Level 2 Apprentices) really are the back bone of the salons. They support the stylist, their jobs range from meeting and greeting the clients, keeping the salon clean and tidy, assisting with the actual services and any other associated tasks. They have a really varied role, no two days are the same for them.
“I don’t think we would be able to do what we do without Apprentices. Because they have such a vital role within the salon, supporting the qualified stylists, it has allowed us to grow quicker, to take future professionals from a very young age and mould them into how we wish them to operate within the organisation. From 16 onwards they become ‘Fox Hair Design’ through and through.
“Working with the College has been really good, it’s a valuable business relationship. There’s a clear understanding from the College’s perspective as to how we operate, what our culture and ethos is and how we provide our training. We’ve been working very closely with the faculty and that allows us to get the best out of the training that’s available.
“We are currently going through our recruitment process for later in the year. We’ve seen a number of candidates through the College and that’s resulted in shortlisting, so we’re just in the process of our final selection for this year.”
