Making an Impact with logistics Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are fast becoming the go-to training option for employers across all sectors.

Paul Dancer, Director for Learning and Skills (Logistics) at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire talks about the College’s Apprenticeship work with IMPACT Fork Trucks Ltd.

“Logistics is a booming sector worth approximately £100bn to the UK’s economy. With the increasing use of new technology and a number of developments at a local level this is a huge focus area for the college. As part of this work to increase skills within the logistics sector we work closely with Impact Fork Trucks, a leading provider of material handling equipment in the UK.”

John Davies, Group Operations Manager at Impact Fork Trucks Ltd said: “At Impact, our response to the Engineering skills shortage highlighted in STEM research (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), has been to recruit a number of Apprentices on an annual basis, a number only set to increase year on year as our business grows organically.

“We currently have 11 Apprentices in our business at various stages of their journey, along with former Apprentices having now transferred into full engineering roles. They are workshop based working under the direct supervision of their Mentor initially carrying out relatively straightforward servicing & repair tasks which increase in complexity as their skill sets improve. As they progress through each ‘Apprentice Year’ we align their activities to match the College modules

“We have appointed Apprentice Mentors giving an opportunity for our more experienced engineers to pass on their knowledge & skills. This influx of young people into our business has improved our company image, profile and we are seen as a progressive and expanding company.”

“Strategically, we see the Apprenticeship development and mentoring programme at Impact, enabling us to futureproof our organisation against the skills shortage of tomorrow.

We are proud to recruit and train the very best people in the forklift industry, our people are our most valuable asset, and often our employees recommend passionate and dedicated people to join our team.

“The College partner us in our annual Apprentice Recruitment Programme to ensure that:–

  • We are seen as an attractive Training Provider/Employer
  • We are able to identify & select the best candidates
  • The College Training & Qualification underpins the on the job development

Paul Dancer added: “As a training provider we work closely with a number of employers to ensure their Apprenticeship programme meets their specific training needs. With many years’ experience of working with organisations in the logistics sector, we encourage anyone considering an Apprenticeship programme to get in touch today. Apprentices can be current employees or new recruits and programmes are available for those 16-18, 19+ and 24+.”

“The also College has a Training Centre located in Harrowbrook Industrial Estate, home to a fork-lift truck training and maintenance area, live warehouse and lift truck driver training facilities.”
