Apprenticeship Funding

2017 will see changes in three major areas

The move from frameworks to standards

  • The current Apprenticeship frameworks are being replaced with new standards
  • Frameworks will be switched off in phases from now, through to 2019/20
  • The new standards are being designed by employer groups/ trailblazers
  • Rather than continuous assessment, they will require an end-point assessment

National funding rates

  • The government’s intention is that Apprenticeships are funded by the levy
  • Each Apprenticeship standard is placed into one of 15 upper limits ranging from £1,500 to £27,000
  • Each standard is allocated to a single funding limit.
  • Employers and training providers negotiate costs within these limits.
  • The amount of levy funds that can be used or government support available for each apprenticeship is capped by the upper limit.

The Apprenticeship Levy

What is it?

The Apprenticeships levy is a tax that supports the government’s pledge to create three million Apprenticeships starts by 2020.

Who does it apply to?

It applies to all employers in England in both private and public sectors but only those who have an annual pay bill of £3 million or more have to pay.

Those who do not have an annual pay bill of more than £3 million do not pay into the levy.
