The Construction sector is set for major growth over the next ten years, but an ageing workforce and growing skills gap means that the sector will need to work hard to ensure it has a pipeline of talent.
Paul Dancer, Director or Learning for Construction and Logistics at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College discusses if the skills gap is a threat or a great opportunity for the sector.
“According to the Construction Training Industry Board (CITB), the Construction industry could create 200,000 new jobs for 2019. There are, however, 400,000 workers due to retire over the next 10 years. Without action, this could create problems as the lack of trained staff leaves the industry unable to meet demand.
“An additional threat is the estimated 200,000 young people under the age of 20 who left the Construction industry during the first year of the recession, the loss of this pipeline could be detrimental…
“As a training provider, we strongly believe that Apprenticeships are the key to training the next generation of Construction workers. By working as a paid employee whilst working towards their qualification, Apprentices develop into loyal team members, with in-depth knowledge not only of the industry but of the specific company they work for.
“The new Apprenticeship standards are designed by employers and focus on certain job roles. This is also a fantastic opportunity for the sector to target skills specific skills areas.
“Another key focus is promoting Construction to young people as an exciting industry: with career options ranging from Bricklaying, Planning, Surveying and Architecture and national projects like to HS2 creating a huge range of job roles in the West Midlands area, there really has never been a better time to join the industry.
“At North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, we currently offer Apprenticeships in:
- Carpentry and Joinery
- Fenestration (Glass)
- Fitted Interiors
- Painting and Decorating
- Property Maintenance
“We also have dedicated Construction facilities at our locations in Hinckley and South Wigston.”
