ICT at North Warwickshire & Hinckley College

becta

In 2008/09 the College worked as a participating provider  for BECTA and throughout 2009/10 worked within the BECTA Technology Exemplar Network as an Exemplar provider; one of only 16 colleges across the UK to gain this accolade. Becta was the government agency leading the national drive to ensure the effective and innovative use of technology throughout learning

A number of events were held including a residential leading a mini-network of nine other colleges and private training providers; two well attended open days which were open to the wider Further Education sector; and a prestigious visit from then Minister of Further Education and Apprenticeships, KevinBrennan.

Technology has been introduced in several ways to benefit our learners and it is firmly embedded in our strategic plan. There are many examples of how we use technology to improve the learner experience. Most recently, the new multi-function ID cards give students more control over their own network accounts and library facilities.

Cut the Carbon Fund

The College has recently been granted LSIS ‘Cut the Carbon Fund’ funding for developing a project entitled “Web-conferencing: a more sustainable approach to communication and learning”.

The aim of the project is to offer staff and students the opportunity to attend online meetings and training events, eliminating the need for them to travel between the sites. This is now possible thanks to Cisco Webex, web-based software that allows remote communication anytime, any place in the world.

The College will benefit from the project in many diverse ways:

-          Reducing fuel consumption

-          Reduction in mileage/transport expenses claims

-          Reduction of the overall College carbon footprint

-          Saving in staff time

-          More efficient workplace
